I started my day to continue the work on Pyrm CAATs, I have received the payroll data from the client and started to work on the payroll test. Before that, the client is unwilling to provide us with the data as she mentioned it is private and confidential data and challenge us by asking what are the reasons we need to have this data, to answer her, I need to inform her that we do not need the salary figure amounts to be included as what we really need to know is who are the employees that received the salary payment on the respective months. After listening to the answer, she is then willing to provide us with the data. So, to start the payroll test, I begin by cleaning the employee listing data, the fields that I want are the employee codes, employee names, their respective joined data, and if has, their resigned date. The fields like their department and job title are cleaned. Next, I moved to the salary listing, it is much more difficult to be cleaned compared with the employee listing, as we need to ensure the important data is kept and not cleaned, if not it will affect our result. I need to have the employee code, employee name, and the month he got the salary, then I will use the pivot table function to summarize all the data and at the end, I can see who are the staff that received a salary for that particular month and how many of staffs received the salary for that month. After that, I will compare the result with the employee listing and at the end, I am able to know: (a) who are the employee that has attended but not getting payment, (b) who are not attended but still get the salary payment. Both of the situations will be raised as ‘variance’ in our report. I managed to generate the report, however, I noticed there are a lot of variances.
Main things that I have learned
-To know that client will not accept our request on the payroll or salary data as it is
private and confidential
-To know how to deal or communicate with clients if the situation stated above
happened
-To know how to utilize excel formulas to fasten the process of payroll tests.
